History of bed sizes in New Zealand

Originally created for Queen Elizabeth I, the queen bed size gained popularity in the 1950s as people got taller, becoming the mattress of choice in New Zealand for many years. More than half of New Zealander’s sleep on a queen size mattress, while double beds account for less than 5% of sales. Today, bedrooms have become a second living area for many, a place to relax and watch TV with their partners. People are opting for larger master bedrooms and larger beds, with the king, super king and California king sizes increasing in popularity. For couples, having some extra space in bed can help them both get a better night’s sleep.

Link between UK, AU and NZ bed sizing

Standard bed sizes and names vary between countries. Standard UK sizes include a small single and a small double, while their king size is closer to the Australian queen size and the super king almost the same as a regular Australian king. New Zealand bed names and sizing are virtually identical to their Australian counterparts, with the exception of the kings – New Zealand king dimensions are 165cm x 203cm (59in x 80in) and while the super king is 183cm x 203cm (72in X 80in) both smaller than the Australian king size beds of the same names.

Queen | Dimensions: 153 cm x 203 cm

Still the most popular bed around, the queen is the favoured choice of couples. It’s big enough for two regular-sized adults to co-sleep in comfort.

King | Dimensions: 183 cm x 203 cm

A king size bed gives extra space for sleeping and relaxation. Ideal for couples who find smaller beds too close for comfort, or for families where kids or pets share their parent’s bed. Great for lounging on in front of the TV.

Super King | Dimensions: 203 cm x 203 cm

A party size bed providing the ultimate in luxury, the super king is also a great choice for taller or bigger people. The vast dimensions create a visual impact, making a master bedroom look intriguing and glamorous.
