Almost every dining table regret comes down to the same mistake: the buyer fell for the table and never measured the room. It arrives, it fits — technically — and then nobody can push their chair back without hitting the wall.
A dining table is the piece of furniture most likely to still be in your family in thirty years. It is also the one most often bought on looks alone. The good news is that getting it right is not a matter of taste or instinct. It is a matter of four numbers, and they take about ten minutes with a tape measure.
The four numbers that decide everything
60cm of table edge per person. That is the width one adult needs to eat without knocking elbows. A 250cm table seats four a side comfortably, plus one at each end. Squeeze below 55cm and dinner becomes a contact sport.
One metre of clearance on every side. This is the number people skip, and it is the one that ruins rooms. You need roughly 100cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or sideboard — enough to pull a chair out and walk behind someone seated. 75cm is the absolute floor, and it feels tight.
75cm table height, 45cm seat height. The standard pairing. If you are buying chairs separately, check both numbers — a 48cm seat under a 74cm table leaves no room for thighs.
Your narrowest doorway. Measure it before you order, not after. A 250cm solid timber table does not flex, and neither does a stairwell turn.
Run those four numbers and the shortlist writes itself. A room that is 340cm wide can take a 100cm-wide table with a metre either side. A room that is 300cm wide cannot — and no amount of wanting it to will change that.

Living with a solid timber table
Use trivets, not hope. Heat is the one thing solid timber genuinely does not forgive. A hot dish straight onto the surface will leave a white bloom that is far harder to remove than a scratch.
Wipe spills promptly. Especially wine, citrus and anything oily. Timber is porous; time is what turns a spill into a stain.
Keep it out of direct sun. A table half in a sunbeam will fade unevenly, and that line is permanent. Rotate the table occasionally if the room only has light from one side.
Expect movement. Solid timber responds to humidity — slight seasonal expansion is the material behaving correctly, not a defect.
And accept the marks. On reclaimed timber especially, the accumulated evidence of family life is the point. A dining table that still looks showroom-new after ten years is a dining table nobody ate at.
