Capiz Framed Mirror | Online8 New Zealand
Capiz is windowpane oyster shell, cut into thin translucent discs, and it does something no painted or plated frame can — it passes light rather than reflecting it. The result is a frame that shifts constantly through the day, glowing where light falls behind or across it and going pearl-grey in shadow. Set in a geometric arrangement around a bevelled circular mirror, it makes a 610mm piece read as considerably more interesting than its size suggests.
Why It Stands Apart
- Real capiz shell. Translucent oyster shell that transmits light instead of bouncing it, so the frame changes character as the light in the room changes.
- A geometric arrangement. The shell is set in an ordered pattern around the glass, which keeps a naturally irregular material looking deliberate rather than rustic.
- A bevelled circular mirror. The angled edge draws a line of light between the shell and the reflection, separating the two rather than letting them run together.
- Only 20mm deep. Slim enough to sit almost flush, which suits a hallway or entryway where a deeper frame would be knocked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the shell colour vary?
Yes. Capiz is a natural material and the discs differ slightly in tone and translucency across a single frame, which is part of the effect. Expect variation between individual pieces as well as within one.
How do I clean it?
A soft dry cloth or a dry brush on the shell, and nothing more. Capiz is thin and brittle, and liquid cleaners will dull the surface and can lift the discs from their backing. Apply glass cleaner to a cloth for the mirror only, keeping well clear of the frame.
Can it go in a bathroom?
No. The construction is 40% MDF, which swells permanently once moisture reaches it, and capiz shell itself does not tolerate sustained humidity. Keep it to hallways, bedrooms and entryways — which, given how it handles light, is where it works best anyway.
How should it be fixed to the wall?
Into a stud where possible, or a plasterboard anchor rated well above the weight. Handle it by the mirror face rather than the frame when you position it — gripping the shell edge risks cracking discs.
What does it weigh?
The recorded figure is a bulk-import placeholder rather than a measured weight, so we have not published it. Call the showroom and we will confirm.
How is it delivered?
Shipping charges are available at checkout.
Can I see it?
