Where should I position it in the garden?
Out of sustained direct sun. A mirror in full sunlight concentrates light and heat onto whatever faces it, and against dry planting or a timber fence that is a real fire risk through a New Zealand summer. A shaded wall or a spot under an eave gives you the light without the hazard.

Will birds fly into it?
They can — birds read the reflected planting as open space. Mounting it higher rather than at ground level helps, as does siting it to reflect a wall or fence rather than open sky and foliage. Screening it partly with a climber breaks up the reflection and largely solves it.

How should it be fixed outdoors?
Into a rail, batten or masonry fixing rated for exterior use, so the fixings do not rust and stain the frame. Remember that wind loading on a 1120mm panel on an exposed wall is a real force that simply is not a factor indoors — do not rely on an indoor-grade fixing.
