Vintage Porthole Outdoor Mirror - Antique Marble | Online8 New Zealand
The material is what makes this one work outside. The frame is cast from magnesia with inorganic fibreglass reinforcement — a composite developed to sit outdoors permanently, unaffected by rain, frost or humidity in a way that timber, MDF and most metals are not. It carries an antique marble finish through the cast rather than on the surface, so it weathers into a courtyard or a covered deck rather than deteriorating in one.
Why It Stands Apart
- Genuinely rated for outdoors. Magnesia and fibreglass composite is specified for exterior use, not merely tolerant of it, so it can live on a courtyard wall or a covered deck year-round.
- Antique marble through the cast. The stone-like colouring runs through the material rather than being painted on, so a chip exposes more of the same finish instead of a pale core.
- Substantial at 1500mm. Tall enough to work as a full feature on an exterior wall, where small garden mirrors tend to read as an afterthought.
- Works indoors too. The same material that survives a courtyard is entirely at home in a bathroom or entrance hall, where humidity would trouble a timber frame.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I position it outdoors?
Out of sustained direct sun. A mirror in full sunlight concentrates light and heat onto whatever faces it, and against dry planting, a timber fence or a wall that is a real fire risk through a New Zealand summer. A shaded wall, a south-facing aspect or a spot under an eave gives you the light-bouncing effect without the hazard.
Will birds fly into it?
They can, and it is the most common problem with garden mirrors — birds read the reflected planting as open space. Mounting it high rather than low helps considerably, as does siting it to reflect a wall or fence rather than open sky and foliage. Partly screening it with a climber breaks up the reflection and largely resolves it.
How should it be fixed?
Into something structural — a stud indoors, a rail or batten outside. Use exterior-rated fixings outdoors so they do not rust and stain the finish, and account for wind loading, which is a real force on a 1500mm panel on an exposed wall and is not a factor indoors.
Why is the shape called a porthole at these dimensions?
It is a styling reference rather than a literal description of the outline. If the exact shape matters to your space, call the showroom before ordering and we will describe what is actually in front of us — the supplier naming across this range is not always a reliable guide.
What does it weigh?
More than the figure we hold. Our recorded weight is barely above what the glass alone weighs at this size, before any of the cast frame is accounted for, so we have not published it. Call the showroom and we will confirm.
How is it delivered?
