The Reclaimed Edit
Timber With a Past: Our Reclaimed Furniture Story
The most sustainable tree is the one that never had to be cut down. Every reclaimed piece we sell starts with timber that has already lived one life, and is ready for another.
Walk through the Online8 showroom and you will notice something about our reclaimed pieces before you read a single label. The grain runs deeper. There are old nail holes, faint saw marks, a line of paint that has worn almost to nothing. These are not finishes applied in a factory to make new timber look old. They are the genuine record of wood that has been in use for half a century or more.
Reclaimed furniture is furniture built from salvaged timber rather than freshly felled trees. At Online8, our reclaimed range is made from timber that is roughly 80 years old: reclaimed oak, pine, elm and mango wood recovered from old buildings in India and China, original pieces from villages in China, and boat wood from retired fishing boats in Indonesia. Each piece is handmade, so no two are ever exactly alike. This is the story of where that timber comes from, and why we think it is one of the most responsible choices you can make for your home.
Reclaimed means…
Timber salvaged from a previous use and rebuilt into new furniture. No new trees felled, and good wood kept out of landfill or the fire.
Reclaimed gives you…
Seasoned, stable timber, decades of real character, and a solid piece of furniture designed to stay in your home for the long haul.
Where our timber comes from
Every reclaimed piece begins somewhere else. Each source leaves its own mark on the timber, and you can often see that history in the finished furniture.
Indonesia
Old fishing boats
Dense teak and iron hardwoods from retired fishing boats, worn by decades at sea and rebuilt into our Boatwood dining tables.
India & China
Old buildings
Timber recovered from old buildings in India and China, saved from demolition waste and handcrafted into new furniture.
Rural China
Village originals
Original pieces from villages in China, rescued and given a new home rather than thrown away.
Whatever its source, the timber is roughly 80 years old. That age gives it its stability and colour, and the marks it carries are what make each piece one of a kind.
Why reclaimed timber is the more sustainable choice
Most of the environmental cost of a timber table is paid before it reaches your dining room: felling the tree, hauling the log, milling and kiln-drying the boards. Reclaimed timber has already been through all of that, decades ago. Giving it a second life means the forest is left standing and the energy spent producing that wood the first time keeps paying off rather than going to waste.
It also rescues material that would otherwise be thrown away. When old furniture, buildings and boats reach the end of their working lives, much of the timber is still sound. Salvaging it, cleaning it up and rebuilding it into a sideboard or a dining table turns what could have been waste into something useful and beautiful.
Old wood is often better wood
There is a practical reason furniture makers prize reclaimed timber. Freshly milled boards still contain moisture and can move as they dry, cupping, twisting or opening up at the joints. Timber that has spent around 80 years in buildings or at sea has long since settled. It is seasoned in a way no kiln can fully replicate, which is why reclaimed pieces tend to stay true for years.
Then there is the look. Pronounced grain, deep tonal variation and edges softened by decades of handling simply cannot be manufactured. A new table can be distressed to look old; a reclaimed table has earned it.
Second life in focus
Reclaimed Boatwood 3000 Dining Table
After decades working the sea, the teak and iron hardwoods of retired Indonesian fishing boats are rebuilt into a three-metre dining table that seats ten to twelve. These dense hardwoods were chosen for boats because they endure, and that same toughness now goes into the centrepiece of your dining room. Every table carries its own colour, grain and markings, so yours will be one of a kind.

The greenest piece of furniture is the one you never have to replace. Cheap flat-pack furniture is often discarded within a few years, when a laminate chips or a particleboard joint gives way. Solid reclaimed timber is built the other way around. It is heavy, robust and repairable, and many of our pieces arrive fully assembled and ready to use.
Reclaimed furniture is also wonderfully forgiving. A new scratch on a high-gloss table is a disaster; on a reclaimed elm sideboard it simply joins the story. Furniture that grows more personal with wear is furniture people keep, and keeping it is the most sustainable thing you can do.
Built to be kept

It offers generous storage for a dining room, living room or hallway, arrives fully assembled, and has exactly the kind of old-world character that only improves with use.
Explore the SideboardEvery piece is one of a kind
Because reclaimed furniture is handmade from timber with a history, the details vary from piece to piece. Expect knots, old insect holes, faint paint lines, saw cuts, an uneven top finish in places and colour that shifts across the grain. Minor cracks or splits can be present when a piece is made, and may also appear after delivery as decades-old timber adjusts to a new home. All of these are natural features rather than faults.
That individuality reaches right across the range, from statement storage to the pieces you use every day.
Settled oak
Heritage Reclaimed Oak Display Cabinet
Oak around 80 years old, salvaged from earlier furniture and hand-finished, stands 2200mm tall with arched glazed doors over distressed open shelving. Because the timber has already settled, it will not cup or twist the way freshly milled oak can.

Caring for reclaimed furniture
Reclaimed timber asks for very little. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth, wipe up spills promptly and use coasters and placemats under hot or wet items. Keep pieces away from heaters, fireplaces and long hours of direct sun, which can dry the timber out. Our reclaimed range is designed for indoor use only, so keep it inside rather than on the deck. Look after it in these simple ways and it will keep doing what it has already done for decades: last.
Reclaimed furniture: your questions answered
What is reclaimed furniture?
Reclaimed furniture is made from timber salvaged from a previous use rather than from newly felled trees. At Online8, our reclaimed timber is roughly 80 years old. It comes from old fishing boats in Indonesia, old buildings in India and China, and original village pieces from China.
Is reclaimed furniture better for the environment?
Yes. Reusing timber means no new trees are felled for it and keeps usable wood out of landfill. Because reclaimed pieces are solid and durable, they also last far longer than disposable furniture, so fewer replacements are needed over time.
Is reclaimed timber strong enough for everyday use?
Reclaimed timber is fully seasoned, so it is generally more stable than freshly milled wood and less likely to warp or twist. Our reclaimed dining tables, sideboards, desks and barstools are built for daily family use.
Are the marks and cracks in reclaimed furniture faults?
No. Knots, nail and insect holes, old paint lines, saw cuts and minor cracks or splits are natural features of timber that is roughly 80 years old. They are part of what makes every piece unique.
Can reclaimed furniture be used outdoors?
Our reclaimed range is recommended for indoor use only. For decks and patios, choose furniture made specifically for outdoor conditions.
