The Reclaimed Dining Edit
Old Timber, Bigger Table: Reclaimed Extension Dining Tables
A table for six on a Tuesday night, a table for twelve on Christmas Day. And timber that has already lasted 80 years, so it is in no hurry to wear out now.
The dining table works harder over the New Zealand summer than any other piece of furniture in the house. Christmas lunch, Boxing Day leftovers, long evenings with visiting family: for a few weeks, everyone ends up around it. For the rest of the year, though, most households do not need a three-metre table taking over the room.
An extension dining table solves that, and a reclaimed one goes further. You get a table that grows when the guest list does, built from aged timber with a grain, colour and history that a newly milled top simply cannot have. This guide walks through why old timber suits a big family table, how the different extension systems work, and how to choose the right size for your space.
Why an extension table…
Live with an everyday-sized table and open it up only when you need the extra seats. Your room keeps its walkways for 50 weeks of the year.
Why old timber…
Reclaimed wood is fully seasoned, so it is stable and full of character. Knots, marks and tonal changes make every table one of a kind.
Why old timber makes a better family table
The reclaimed timber in our range is roughly 80 years old. It comes from old boats in Indonesia, old buildings in India and China, and original village pieces from China, and it is given a second life as furniture rather than going to waste. No new trees are felled to make it.
Age also has practical benefits. Timber that has spent decades drying out has done most of its moving already, so it is generally more stable than freshly milled wood. That matters on an extension table, where leaves need to sit flush with the main top year after year. And because reclaimed tops already carry marks from a previous life, the odd scratch from a dropped serving spoon simply joins the story rather than ruining a perfect finish.

Country Double Extension Dining Table — Old Elm
Built from reclaimed old elm around 80 years old, salvaged from old houses, vintage boats and historic building materials. A double butterfly mechanism hides two leaves inside the table, taking it from 2100mm to 2600mm to 3100mm, while a stainless steel roller system centres the top at every length. Elm's interlocking grain resists splitting, which is why craftsmen have trusted it for centuries. Only the legs need assembling.

How extension tables actually extend
Not every extension table works the same way, and the mechanism affects how easy it is to use on the day. These are the systems you will find across our reclaimed range:
- Butterfly leaves: the leaves fold away inside the table, so there is nothing to store in a cupboard. Pull the top apart, unfold the leaf and push it closed.
- Double extension: two leaves instead of one, giving three working lengths rather than two. Ideal if your gatherings range from eight to a full house.
- Raised drop ends: the ends lift up rather than pull out, extending the table and changing its shape at the same time. A clever choice for smaller dining rooms.

Size it for the full-length day
The everyday length is easy to plan for. The mistake is forgetting the day the table is fully open. Measure your room with the table at its longest setting, then add around 900mm at each end and along each side so people can pull out chairs and walk behind them.
For seating, allow roughly 600mm of table edge per person. Wider chairs, such as armchairs or upholstered styles, need more. Remember that most extensions add length at the ends, so the clearance at each end is the measurement that changes. If you are not sure, call our showroom with your room size and chair width and we will check it against the table for you. For a deeper look at sizing, read our guide on how to choose a dining table.
Caring for a reclaimed extension table
Reclaimed timber asks for very little. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, wipe spills up promptly, and use coasters and placemats under hot dishes and wet glasses. Keep the table away from heaters, fireplaces and long hours of direct sun, which can dry timber out. Our reclaimed range is designed for indoor use only. Open the leaves every so often, even outside the holidays, so the extended sections see the same light as the main top and their colour ages evenly. For oak pieces such as the PURE Maui, feeding the wood with a furniture beeswax keeps it nourished.
Reclaimed extension dining tables: your questions answered
What is a reclaimed extension dining table?
It is a dining table made from salvaged timber rather than newly felled trees, with leaves or ends that extend its length when you need more seats. At Online8, our reclaimed timber is roughly 80 years old.
Which reclaimed extension table seats 12?
The Country Double Extension Dining Table in old elm seats 8 to 12, extending from 2100mm to 3100mm. The Farmhouse Extension Dining Table seats 8–10 at 2400mm and 10–12 extended to 3000mm.
Is reclaimed timber stable enough for an extension mechanism?
Yes. Reclaimed timber is fully seasoned after decades of drying, so it is generally more stable than freshly milled wood and less likely to warp. That helps the leaves sit flush with the main top over time.
Will the extension leaves match the rest of the table?
They are made from the same reclaimed timber, but because every piece of old wood is different, expect natural variation in grain and tone. Leaves stored inside the table may also look slightly fresher at first, and they even out with use and light.
Are the knots and marks faults?
No. Knots, nail holes, saw marks and colour changes are natural features of timber around 80 years old. They are what make each reclaimed table one of a kind.
